How to build a strong presence on LinkedIn
Now that you’ve learned how powerful LinkedIn is in the Philippines as a recruitment tool, the next step is making your profile stand out to hiring managers.
With the help of Yempo’s Talent Acquisition Team, we’ve listed down the dos and don’ts for Filipino jobseekers on building a strong presence on LinkedIn.
Dos
- Use a good headshot. According to LinkedIn, profiles with photos get up to 21x more views. Skip selfies and get a professional headshot taken.
- Showcase a detailed employment history. Keep this section updated and don’t forget to tailor your experience to reflect current roles and achievements.
- Showcase your skills. Add relevant skills and get proper endorsements from your colleagues and managers. Profiles with five or more skills get 17x more profile views.
- Leverage content sharing. Share posts, links, and articles related to your work. Discuss industry trends and news or ask questions to engage with your network to increase your reach.
Don’ts
- Leave your profile empty or incomplete. Recruiters quickly skip over incomplete profiles, so never leave any sections blank.
- Invite questions over missing details. If you’ve had many short-term stints, explaining this in your summary and during interviews is better than letting recruiters guess.
- Write inappropriate comments. LinkedIn is still a social media platform but remember to keep it professional. Keep your comments constructive and relevant.
How to engage on LinkedIn
Once you have a solid profile, it’s time to engage. Connect with colleagues and industry leaders. Remember to join discussions, comment on posts, and share your insights. The more active you are, the more you’ll grow your network, which increases your visibility and brings you on the good side of LinkedIn’s algorithm.
Remember to follow relevant companies and interact with their content. Let’s say you’re eyeing a job at a top outsourcing firm–engage with their posts, share thoughtful comments, and make yourself known. This shows that you’re genuinely interested in the industry and keeps you on recruiters’ radar.
What do Yempo recruiters look for?
We asked our Talent Acquisition team at Yempo for the lowdown on what they look for in a Filipino jobseeker’s LinkedIn profile and CV:
Turn ons:
- An organized profile/CV. “We love seeing an attached clear resume of what someone has accomplished in their roles,” says our TA team.
- Detailed work experience. “Marketing Specialist” is okay, but adding a little more helps. Try “Marketing Specialist | Digital and PR Expert” It’s short and says more about your personality than a generic job title.
- Endorsements and recommendations. TA teams love these. If your colleagues or clients think you’re awesome, let LinkedIn (and our recruiters) know!
Turn offs:
- Poor grammar: This is not Facebook, and lousy grammar screams, “I don’t pay attention to details.” We all sometimes need help; if you’re not confident in your writing skills, get a friend to proofread before posting.
- Incomplete profiles: TA teams want the full picture—work experience, education, skills, and a snappy headline. Include everything needed to save everyone’s time.
